Mohs Surgery at SKIN
What is Mohs surgery?
In Mohs surgery at SKIN, the skin cancer is excised and then immediately examined under the microscope to ensure it has been adequately removed. If any cancer cells remain, this area can be further excised until all the cancer is removed. The wound is only closed once we are confident that all the cancer has been removed.
This differs from standard surgery which involves excision of your skin cancer following followed immediately by wound repair. Your skin specimen is then sent to the laboratory to be processed over a number of days. In some circumstances further surgery may then be required if your cancer is not completely removed on the first occasion.
advantages of MOHs surgery
The most significant advantage of Mohs surgery is that it achieves outstanding results by providing assurance that it is completely removed. Mohs surgery has been shown to achieve a long-term cure rate of 99%. The fact that we are able to treat your skin cancer completely, in one session, also reduces stress for the patient, who doesn’t risk the inconvenience of repeating the process if inadequate margins are achieved in the first procedure.
Mohs surgery also allows the surgeon to achieve the best cosmetic outcome, minimising scarring while working with complete confidence that all the skin cancer has been removed. This makes it particularly beneficial for treating skin cancers on the face and neck.
